Parallel Parking Visualizer
Step through the maneuver. Watch the car move; read what to do, what to see in the mirror, and where the steering wheel goes.

โ
Before you start
Pick a space at least 1.5ร your car's length. Signal right. Pull up alongside the front car so your rear bumper aligns roughly with theirs โ about 2โ3 feet of side clearance.
Check traffic. Glance left to confirm no oncoming or following driver is closing on you. Once you commit to the reverse, you cannot easily abort.
Use a hand-over-hand wheel motion, not palming or one-finger steering. The DMV tester is watching.
Common mistakes
Turning too early
If you turn the wheel right while you are still alongside the front car, your front bumper swings into their lane and your rear corner does not reach the curb. Begin the reverse straight, then turn.
Turning too late
If you wait until you are well past their rear bumper before turning, the angle is too shallow and you finish far from the curb. The reference point is your rear bumper level with theirs.
Forgetting to straighten
If you keep the wheel cranked right all the way back, you finish at a sharp angle, not parallel. Straighten the wheel mid-maneuver, then turn left to align.
Hitting the curb
Reversing too far left with the wheel still cranked. Your right rear wheel climbs the curb. Stop at first contact. Pull forward and try again.
Tapping the rear car
Not watching what is in your right mirror near the end. Stop when your right mirror clears the front car's left rear corner โ that is the alignment trigger.
Not centering
Most DMV rubrics require โค12 inches from the curb and roughly equal gaps to both neighbors. Pull forward to center after parallel is achieved.
DMV scoring rubric ยท typical
Most US states grade parallel parking on a per-fault demerit system. Below is the typical rubric used by many state road-test exams.
| Fault | Demerit |
|---|
Pass / fail. Most states allow up to 30 cumulative demerits on the road test. Hitting a curb or another vehicle is usually an automatic fail.
